The name \swarm it^ has a dual meaning:

  • An abbreviation for Swarm Intelligence, the emergent, intelligent behaviour arising from the decentralized, self-organized actions of individuals in a non-hierarchical community
  • The intentional action of applying swarm intelligence in a particular context (more on this below)

As for the symbols,

  • The backslash \ means "escape" in some computing applications, and here symbolizes that the intentional participation in the community is an escape from the hegemonic nature of mainstream education.
  • The caret ^ is used to denote exponents, and here symbolizes the exponential potential of swarm intelligence.

The history of the name:

While developing the concept of a community powered educational approach, we were brainstorming names, and one of the suggestions was "The Bees". From there we went on to explore "The Swarm" (because a collection of Bees is a Swarm), and then discovered the term "Swarm Intelligence", which seemed a pretty nice term for what we were hoping to conceive.

When searching for a suitable and available domain name, we found swa.rm.it, where we could have backsplained that ".it" referred to "intelligence". However, with ChatGPT's assistance we were able to backsplain "swarm It" as the application of swarm intelligence in difference contexts:

  1. Collective Intelligence
"Swarm it" refers to harnessing the collective knowledge, insights, and ideas of a group to solve problems or generate new solutions. Just as a swarm of bees works together to find the best resources, a group of people can pool their knowledge to make better decisions or solve complex issues.
  2. Collaborative Problem Solving
"Swarm it" implies bringing together diverse individuals to tackle a problem from multiple angles simultaneously. Each person contributes their expertise or perspective, leading to a more robust and comprehensive solution.
  3. Crime Prevention
"Swarm it" could involve communities coming together to monitor their neighborhoods, share information, and collectively deter criminal activity.
  4. Restorative Justice
"Swarm it" could mean involving a community or group in the process of healing and reconciliation after a crime has occurred. This collective approach helps to address the needs of victims, offenders, and the community, ensuring a more holistic resolution.
  5. Teamwork
"Swarm it" suggests that a team can achieve more by working together, with each member contributing their unique strengths and skills to accomplish a shared goal, even in the absence of centralized coordination
  6. Creativity and Art
"Swarm it" can refer to collaborative artistic endeavors where multiple creators work together, feeding off each other's ideas and energy to produce something innovative and original. The collective creative process often leads to richer and more diverse artistic outcomes.
  7. Conservation
"Swarm it" implies mobilizing communities, organizations, and individuals to work together on environmental protection and restoration efforts. This collective action can be more effective in addressing issues like habitat destruction, climate change, and species preservation.
  8. Human Rights
"Swarm it" in human rights involves collective advocacy, where groups and organizations come together to raise awareness, pressure governments, and work towards protecting and promoting human rights while also working on their own missions
  9. Education
"Swarm it" could mean collaborative learning environments where students work together to solve problems, share knowledge, and support each other's learning. Teachers and students can also collaborate in the design and delivery of educational content, enhancing the learning experience. (Of course, all of ChatGPT's training material is based on hegemonic, foisted, paternalistic adult-directed education, so it is not easy to convince it to let go of the Teacher-Student binary)
